Boxer Dog Breed Overview

boxer dog The boxer is a medium sized breed but is also a powerful one. The breed weighs anywhere from 50-70 pound in their adulthood; males usually outweigh the females and are larger in size. Originally it was the standard to have your boxers ears cropped and tail docked. However, with animal rights programs this has become less popular and even banned in some countries. Now it’s fairly common to see this breed with long ears and an undocked tail.

Boxers are classified in three two color groups, brindle and fawn. They often also have white marks around their belly’s, chest and feet and head. The black color around their face is known as a mask. The black mask is what gives them that distinct “Boxer” look. Not every dog has a completely black mask, some have white markings around their nose in the middle of the “mask”.

  • Brindle Boxers often have stripes on their bodies that resemble similar markings to a tiger. Their fur color is usually reddish brown with dark, sometimes even black, stripes going down their bodies. Brindle Boxers are usually smaller in size than fawn Boxers.
  • Fawn Boxers are brown in color and usually have a white chest. They are often larger in size than brindle Boxers. They are usually more common and they are probably the Boxer dog you picture when you think of this breed.
  • White boxers have more white fur covering their body and they are commonly known as “white boxers”. Contradictory to popular belief, these boxers are not albino and are not rare as rare as some breeders might claim. They are still brindle or fawn; they just have a larger area of white.

Their coat is close to their body and they have short hair which is great if you don’t want long dog hair all over your clothes and furniture. Their coat comes in two different colors and it is fawn and brindle. A lot of boxers have white fur covering their paws and underbellies, including the neck area.
